Middle School 4-H students will meet on the RHMS campus this year. Ms. Renee Bryce will be our RHMS Staff member who sponsors the group on our campus.
Bryan County 4-H sent 19 delegates to participate in the 2019 Mission Make-It: The Georgia 4-H Engineering Challenge on August 17, 2019, at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton, GA.
This non-competitive 4-H event offers middle school students the opportunity to develop teamwork, communication and critical thinking skills while completing engineering challenges. With the growth in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) youth programs, Georgia 4-H began offering this program in 2016.
Throughout the day, the 4-H’ers worked in small groups to use the five-phase engineering design process: ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve. This year’s theme focused on aerospace design in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing. Youth built rockets and launch pads to send rockets to inflatable moons. Additionally, they constructed space modules designed for splashdown in the ocean, represented by a miniature pool. The event also included presentations from professionals to encourage them to continue learning and discuss potential career paths.
Dr. Loris Magnani, Professor of astronomy at the University of Georgia served as the opening speaker, addressing the future of space travel. His current research focuses on cold gas clouds between the stars of our Galaxy. Major Benjamin Calhoon, United States Air Force Reservist, spoke on Global Positioning System (GPS) and aerospace-related careers.
“The best thing about today” said Bryan County 4-H’er Ayden Plummer, “was working as a team with new friends while learning about science!”
